Awaken the Sleeping Giant

Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the instance that changed America forever. For a long time America had been on its own on a completely different continent where the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans protected against attacks. Being far from enemies allowed America to build and live safely. This was about to change…

On December 7th (December 8th in Japan) at 7:48 am Hawaiian time, a massive aerial attack commenced on the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. 2,402 Americans were killed and another 1,282 wounded. USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS West Virginia, USS California, USS Nevada, USS Maryland, USS Tennessee, USS Pennsylvania, USS Utah, USS Helena, USS Raleigh, USS Shaw, USS Downes, USS Cassin, USS Honolulu, USS Curtiss , USS Vestal, and USS Oglala were all hit. Most would not return to service, crippling the Pacific Fleet.

This truly is a date which will live in infamy for an attack of such caliber and magnitude had never occurred and would not happen again until September 11, 2001. I can only imagine the fear that it brought everyone from those sailors at Pearl Harbor, to the Families on the mainland, and to even the allies overseas knowing that  an attack can hurt America. I have watched many movies, documentaries, books and museums about Pearl Harbor and used to be a main interest in mine.

However, and we all see it today, this tragedy is beginning to fade away as the generation passes. Only 2,700 survivors of the attack are still alive. In their 80’s most of these men and women are becoming a forgotten memory but we need to remember this disaster and always appreciate its cost. Many men and women died on this day 70 years ago to protect us just like many are doing today. President Roosevelt united a country with his declaration of war to congress and lead us to victory against evil.

I ask you all to spend just 5 minutes to think and reflect because it was the 9/11 of its day.
