AwesomeCon 2016

AwesomeCon finally arrived last weekend and sure enough I went this year. Now unlike in the past when I have gone for multiple days, I only attended on Sunday but I was not alone. This year I took two friends with me and all three of us dressed up in costume. I believe it was their first ComicCon ever and the fact they dressed up made it even more enjoyable and entertaining.

No Trains Today

images.jpg

An extremely unusual event took place on Wednesday, the Metro system for the Washington, DC metropolitan area was shut down. That is right, the system that has over 700,000 riders daily was shut down on a weekday. The announcement came at 4:30 pm the day before and many people were taken by surprise. The entire area got to experience a day without metro and for some it was enlightening and others it was troublesome.

Proof When You Need It

If you have ever gone and YouTube you will have noticed some of the most common car videos are car crashes caught on a dash camera. A decent percentage of these videos are from Russia or Asian countries. The reason why there are so many from these countries is because of insurance scams. I am not sure exactly why or how the insurance system works in these countries but I am sure people that have the cameras feel more comfortable having this protection. Now the question is why has it taken so long to even gain traction in USA?

Pope’s Visit to DC

One of the great things about living in Washington DC area is that very influential people from all around the world come to visit. The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, recently visited the United States of America and was overall met by large crowds filled with love and enthusiasm. Even many non-Catholics came out to see and hear what the Pope had to say. While I am not religious in any sense, Pope Francis is one of the several world leaders that I check the news on from time to time.

YUM YUM IN MY TUM TUM

Food is the only medium in art that utilizes 4 of the five senses, taste, touch, sight, and smell. The best chefs know and play with all of these senses to give the customer a really wonderful experience. The food and restaurants don’t have to be very expensive or well known to be wonderful and bring up wonderful memories. With that being said my best friend, Naeroby Nunez, is a true artist and a wonderful chef. Naeroby is currently a sous chef at 1789, a classic American restaurant in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC.

Already 10 Years Later

There are many times where I think back to fond memories in high school where I think of close friends or things that happened. These memories are sometimes so vivid that I feel like they are fresh and just occurred the day before. It is hard to imagine how ever that these memories are 10 years old or even older. I was able to reminisce many of these memories and even several I completely forgot about a few weeks ago with old friends. It really is hard to imagine that over 10 years ago, I graduated from high school and even more hard to imagine that we have now had our 10 year high school reunion weekend. Yes, you read that correctly, Weekend!!! A three hour small gathering is not long enough to catch up with old friends and find out what everyone is up to these days. So our high school reunion committee made it into a small weekend event. A good choice if you ask me because picking a date when everyone is free and able to attend is difficult especially at our age when so many of our friends are getting married and money is still a major factor in plans.

Apartment or Tiny House?

So as I grow older, more questions are asked about what my future is going to be like. I am still unsure of many things in my life such as job, where I want to settle down, and how will I make money. Two things are certain, I want to travel and I want a family. There is still a lot in this world I want to experience and I don’t want to do it alone. In the mean time I am stressed about the future path because of my past still haunting me.

Still not ok to break the law

351512

Several days ago a gentleman was driving in a funeral possession for his great-grandmother. He was carrying several family members and was a pall-bearer. During the possession he ran a red light trying to keep up and was subsequently stopped by Alexandria Police. He was issued a ticket for running the red light even if he was in a possession. His argument was that he had the little orange hangar on his rear view mirror along with his hazards on. The funeral was not escorted by police and instead by the funeral homes escort vehicle. The family filed a complaint and the matter was investigated but instantly they did find that the man did break the law. According to police if a procession is led by anything other than a police vehicle in Virginia, the procession must follow all traffic laws.

AwesomeCon 2014

20140420-220852.jpg
This weekend AwesomeCon was held in DC and since I have never had the chance or availability to attend any Con except via online such as BlizzCon or ComicCon in LA. I was hoping to find people to go with since I had never been to one before and I was honestly a little nervous. This was the second year of this con and already it had a lot of different panels to choose from and even a nerdy speed dating which I thought was interesting. Since my schedule was already packed I really had to pick and choose what I saw and when.

An Unexpected Long Weekend

And DC Metro area was struck with yet another snow storm. This one dumped a solid 6 inches on Monday meaning everything was closed and I had an extra day to relax and regroup from a very stressful week at work. Someone please tell the CIA to stop messing with their weather control machine… I am getting sick of these one day 60 degree weather and next is snowing…

Blood Donations

Well a large snow storm hit the DC area causing closures of schools and government and cancellations of many events and activities. Many people do not realize that blood shortages are common during storms because blood drives are canceled and donators can’t make it to the donor services centers. Over the years when there have been disastrous storms, blood stores run dangerously low and blood banks have to ration. I would be devastated if I had to have emergency surgery and there was not enough blood to go around .

Honor Flight

Since I was in AJROTC, I have followed several different organizations for Veterans. The two I check on regularly are POW/MIA and Honor Flight. POW/MIA helps track down lost soldiers and to provide families with closure as well are remembrance. Honor Flight helps organize and bring World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veterans to DC to see the memorials dedicated to them. They help plan and organize transportation and medical needs while traveling. I am a big fan and supporter of both of these organizations and will at times go to events to volunteer my time.

Shutdown

Today the American government shut down putting many Americans without work or a paycheck. We have no idea how long this will last; 1 day or 100 days, it all will be bad or worse. The last time this happened was in 1996 for 21 days. It is obvious tea party republicans are responsible for the shut down for not passing any resolution with Obamacare. The funny thing is even though they shut down the government Obamacare still started up today and was not affected. Their posturing has made it harder for Americans to make a buck.

Battle at home

The whole time i have lived here the DMV has seen many disasters and horrors. Yesterday was another tragedy, a shooter made his way on to the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. He made his way to Naval Sea Systems Command and began shooting. A total of 13 people including the shooter are dead and another 15 people are wounded.

It is very sad that mass shooting are so common. I often work at the Navy Yard at the History and Heritage Command and to know that this can happen so close to where I work scares me. I was upset all day Monday. I hope we can control all of this gun violence because I don’t want my children growing up in a world like this.

To Protect and Serve

Last week was police week and there were many cops from nation wide here in the DC area. It is nice that we celebrate and remember those those work hard to keep us safe. A lot of you know my past and the mistakes I have made but it will surprise you that I haw great respect for police officers. It actually bothers me when people say “Fuck the police” and music and movies make them out to be the bad guys. I know there have been stories about bad or rotten cops however no matter where you go in society there will always be bad people and they sometimes do get into law enforcement. There are plenty of great cops out there and they deserve our cooperation and respect.

Update

Well it’s another month and not much to update on. I have been keeping up my dailies in World of Warcraft and close to 5000 dailies completed. I have primarily been working on reputation grinding for a few hard factions to give me something to look forward too. I have been enjoying the ‘looking for raid’ function and have really been doing more current stuff than in the last.
