AwesomeCon 2016

AwesomeCon finally arrived last weekend and sure enough I went this year. Now unlike in the past when I have gone for multiple days, I only attended on Sunday but I was not alone. This year I took two friends with me and all three of us dressed up in costume. I believe it was their first ComicCon ever and the fact they dressed up made it even more enjoyable and entertaining.

3.22.16

Yesterday another terrorist attack took place in Western Europe. Three suicide bombers opened gunfire and detonated bombs killing over 31 people and injuring 271 others. Two of the bombs detonated at the Brussels International Airport and the third bomb exploded at a subway station in Brussels, Belgium. This attack is thought to be in revenge for the arrest and capture of the mastermind behind the attacks on Paris in November of last year.

Not Your Average Comic

images

Remember a time when you didn’t have an iPhone or iPad when you were settled on the toilet for the long haul? Most people growing up with out these time distractions did not have the Internet at our finger tips so we had to improvise. Most people had a good book, puzzle, magazine, or worst case, the dreaded shampoo bottle to act as a diversion. For myself growing up I had a luxury item in my bathroom for when I needed it, a wonderful comic book titled “Calvin and Hobbes.”

Next Stop Ares

800px-Mars_23_aug_2003_hubble

Ares, Sol IV, Mars… It goes by many names (much like Earth, Gaia, Terra, or Sol III) but it has remained one of the main focuses when we look to the stars. Why has Mars been on our minds for so long? Will we ever be able to follow Hollywood and actually visit Mars in our lifetimes? Can we seriously see a future and clear distinction between Terrans and Martians? Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system and the only other planet that comes within the habitability zone. The other planets and moons are potentially to dangerous and extreme for us to visit let alone settle. Earth’s Moon, Jupiter’s moon Titan, and a few others could one day be home for humans but the logical choice is Mars.

The Workshop

Every person needs a space to themselves, a place that they can relax in, study, work on projects, and store and display things that represent them. This space has been apart of our homes for long time and takes on different names depending on the person for which it is created. Since I don’t have my own home yet I drastically needed a space to set up and store all my stuff. After looking at several different and unique storage ideas such as people creating a unique space within a truck, bus, and shipping containers I decided on a storage unit. I have now had my storage unit for about a year now and it is my workshop.

Already 10 Years Later

There are many times where I think back to fond memories in high school where I think of close friends or things that happened. These memories are sometimes so vivid that I feel like they are fresh and just occurred the day before. It is hard to imagine how ever that these memories are 10 years old or even older. I was able to reminisce many of these memories and even several I completely forgot about a few weeks ago with old friends. It really is hard to imagine that over 10 years ago, I graduated from high school and even more hard to imagine that we have now had our 10 year high school reunion weekend. Yes, you read that correctly, Weekend!!! A three hour small gathering is not long enough to catch up with old friends and find out what everyone is up to these days. So our high school reunion committee made it into a small weekend event. A good choice if you ask me because picking a date when everyone is free and able to attend is difficult especially at our age when so many of our friends are getting married and money is still a major factor in plans.

LLAP

This past weekend we said goodbye to a person I looked up to for a long time. Leonard Nimoy  passed away on the morning of Febuary 27th. He was a cultural icon for many by taking on the role as Spock in the tv show Star Trek. While Star Trek only lasted for 3 season it helped spark the imagination of many and open up the thoughts of the future and taking care of the needs of the many. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, created a future where people of all races and creeds, genders and even worlds would be able to work together. Their goals of exploration and science over greed and self indulgence helped many nerds, including myself, to want to become scientists and care for the future of man-kind.

2014 Olympics

sochi-2014-logo

As we have come to an end we look back at another successful Winter Olympics. For 2014, Sochi Russia on the Coast of the black sea was the host to the games. The small Russian coastal city had to build everything from scratch making this the highest price tag for an Olympic games, 51 Billion dollars. For these games we will remember the double bathroom stalls, people getting stuck and having to break out of bathrooms, and incomplete housing for athletes and spectators.

Everything is Awesome… with the Lego Movie

The-LEGO-Movie-2014-Poster
Awesome Awesome Awesome! That is the best way to describe this movie. Not to give to much away but it has a wonderful script that has a real story that every person who has ever created anything with Legos will understand. The message is simple, have fun! Those of us who follow the directions vs. those of us who create amazing things from our imagination; the battle is constant and Lego knows its audience to show that battle. I expected a good movie more so targeted to children but I was wrong and I came out holding back tears because it is for master builders of all ages.

2015-Ford-F150

The DC Auto show was in town last week and of course with my busy schedule, I couldn’t find a moment to go. The real reason why I wanted to go this year was of course the display of the new 2015 F150. According to Ford’s website, the new design would have been at the show but the shows website along with several people I know said that it wasn’t there or they couldn’t find it. That alone made me not stress to much about missing the show but this post is about the beautiful and new F150.

Minecraft…

So I have avoided Minecraft for one simple reason, not to get addicted… well I finally downloaded it earlier this month and have been really enjoying my time mining through stone, killing pigs and getting pushed into lava by zombies. This game really challenged my rage-quit control; I have started many new maps as I learn the game and tricks. I have also had to rely heavily on youtube to learn how to use redstone (an electric current type of rock) and how to get my minecarts moving on the track.

Na Na Na Na Na Na Batkid

For a day this week San Francisco transformed in to the legendary Gotham City. Saving the day while raising the spirits of a major U.S. city was pint-sized Miles Scott, 5. Miles is in remission from leukemia, and, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, managed to turn his obsession with comic book heroes into the real thing. Well, almost. There was no way Penguin and Riddler were going to get away with anything on Friday. The city was touched by Batkid and by taking down the Penguin and Riddler he brought the power of what one young kid can do to touch our hearts.

Honor Flight

Since I was in AJROTC, I have followed several different organizations for Veterans. The two I check on regularly are POW/MIA and Honor Flight. POW/MIA helps track down lost soldiers and to provide families with closure as well are remembrance. Honor Flight helps organize and bring World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veterans to DC to see the memorials dedicated to them. They help plan and organize transportation and medical needs while traveling. I am a big fan and supporter of both of these organizations and will at times go to events to volunteer my time.

CONFIRMED!

There has finally been confirmation that Area 51 exists! Now so far the documents that have been released reference it’s existence and location. The documents have many redacted which means additional information has not been released only partial documents. This still means we don’t know much as to what is there or anything that takes place on this CIA base.

Lego Simpsons

lego-simpsons-official-sets-1

Lego just announced that the Simpsons will be joining the world of Lego and as a fan of both the Simpsons and Lego I am very happy about this. Ever since Lego came out with Star Wars I wondered what else could be made into Legos. I really started to wonder why the Simpsons were not when they came out with the Spongebob sets. I love the Indiana Jones, Batman, Star Wars, and Marvel sets a lot and when I heard Simpsons were coming out I was ecstatic!

Project: TITAN

20130601-223809.jpg
As many of you all know I am an avid World of Warcraft player. World of Warcraft has been out for almost ten years now; seven of which I have been playing. Well recently Blizzard announce and confirmed rumors of Project Titan, another MMORPG. So what does this mean for WoW? Already developers and other team members have been tasked to the new project from WoW. With BlizzCon coming in November we will find out more also if there will be a new expansion pack for WoW.
