So yet another year has passed. Nothing much worth to report, a few accidents, still working hard at the same job and trying to stay active. So the new plan is to make this next year more interesting. This is going to be the year of mental improvement for me and I have some big plans ahead.
For Thanksgiving this year my family was invited over to my sister-in-law’s family Thanksgiving dinner. Normally we have dinner at home with our uncle a few neighbors and sometimes cousins. This typically is about 10 people or less. This year was such a wonderful gathering to be invited to and the weather outside was perfect for sitting outdoors and drinking some beer. Seeing and talking to more of my sister-in-law’s family was a real treat. Over 20 people were gathered around to give thanks and enjoy each others company. I am very thankful that we had the privilege to be invited and that they wanted to be bothered by our presence. By the end of desert I was ready to pass out from all the fun and excitement. I don’t know how the rest of them kept going for hours and hours.
On Friday the 13th, a series of organized attacks erupted in the City of Paris, France. Not since WWII has Paris seen this kind of devastation. 129 people died with another 350+ injured. All I can do is pray and hope those responsible face proper judgement.
Remember a time when you didn’t have an iPhone or iPad when you were settled on the toilet for the long haul? Most people growing up with out these time distractions did not have the Internet at our finger tips so we had to improvise. Most people had a good book, puzzle, magazine, or worst case, the dreaded shampoo bottle to act as a diversion. For myself growing up I had a luxury item in my bathroom for when I needed it, a wonderful comic book titled “Calvin and Hobbes.”
This past weekend we said goodbye to a person I looked up to for a long time. Leonard Nimoy passed away on the morning of Febuary 27th. He was a cultural icon for many by taking on the role as Spock in the tv show Star Trek. While Star Trek only lasted for 3 season it helped spark the imagination of many and open up the thoughts of the future and taking care of the needs of the many. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, created a future where people of all races and creeds, genders and even worlds would be able to work together. Their goals of exploration and science over greed and self indulgence helped many nerds, including myself, to want to become scientists and care for the future of man-kind.
One thing I have faced recently has been the strong wall of writer’s block. It has been a while since I have posted any new story or poem and it isn’t for the lack of trying. Every time I try and write, I draw a blank or don’t know where to go. Because of this I have deleted whole paragraphs because they didn’t flow or fit with what I wanted to speak about. Currently I have three large posts I have been working on, one of which for almost six months.
As we have come to an end we look back at another successful Winter Olympics. For 2014, Sochi Russia on the Coast of the black sea was the host to the games. The small Russian coastal city had to build everything from scratch making this the highest price tag for an Olympic games, 51 Billion dollars. For these games we will remember the double bathroom stalls, people getting stuck and having to break out of bathrooms, and incomplete housing for athletes and spectators.
Well a large snow storm hit the DC area causing closures of schools and government and cancellations of many events and activities. Many people do not realize that blood shortages are common during storms because blood drives are canceled and donators can’t make it to the donor services centers. Over the years when there have been disastrous storms, blood stores run dangerously low and blood banks have to ration. I would be devastated if I had to have emergency surgery and there was not enough blood to go around .
Here is my year in review as well as what I hope to accomplish in 2014. 2013 was a year of realization for me and 2014 will be the year of accomplishments.
It was Albert Einstein who, on the passing of Mahatma Gandhi, remarked that “Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth.” and so it is with Nelson Mandela.
For a day this week San Francisco transformed in to the legendary Gotham City. Saving the day while raising the spirits of a major U.S. city was pint-sized Miles Scott, 5. Miles is in remission from leukemia, and, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, managed to turn his obsession with comic book heroes into the real thing. Well, almost. There was no way Penguin and Riddler were going to get away with anything on Friday. The city was touched by Batkid and by taking down the Penguin and Riddler he brought the power of what one young kid can do to touch our hearts.
Since I was in AJROTC, I have followed several different organizations for Veterans. The two I check on regularly are POW/MIA and Honor Flight. POW/MIA helps track down lost soldiers and to provide families with closure as well are remembrance. Honor Flight helps organize and bring World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veterans to DC to see the memorials dedicated to them. They help plan and organize transportation and medical needs while traveling. I am a big fan and supporter of both of these organizations and will at times go to events to volunteer my time.
The whole time i have lived here the DMV has seen many disasters and horrors. Yesterday was another tragedy, a shooter made his way on to the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. He made his way to Naval Sea Systems Command and began shooting. A total of 13 people including the shooter are dead and another 15 people are wounded.
It is very sad that mass shooting are so common. I often work at the Navy Yard at the History and Heritage Command and to know that this can happen so close to where I work scares me. I was upset all day Monday. I hope we can control all of this gun violence because I don’t want my children growing up in a world like this.
A highway filled with lights
Flashes racing to their destination
Getting lost in neighborhoods they don’t belong
Going around in circles
Lights go dark
In a blink flashes are lost forever
Never know who or what
Dreams and memories are lost in the black
Other flashes grow brighter
They have found their home
Never second guessing how
Never second guessing why
Sharing the idea to the rest of the light
The foundation is set and more flashes gather
An idea grows to a plan
From plan to a movement
Movement to success
Something is missing
One flash is holding the key
The final step to making it happen
The flash that was dark brightens
Racing home from the darkness
A long journey ahead
Randomly finding its way
Filling the void of thought
Everything makes sense now
My brain is whole
Can you imagine what you would do if you won the lottery? I have thought about what I would do if I won a million dollars but I can’t imagine if I had won 425 million in yesterdays lottery. I was thinking about everything I would get and then I realized something.
This was such a moving short to watch because it makes you think when the end is near what will you do to insure your children’s survival. I hope you enjoy it because I really loved it and I have never seen anyone come up with this idea or topic before.
I watched this video earlier today and I was astonished at the new technology that allows for a sturdy structure to be erected within just five hours. This is a great step for bringing safe havens for people in third-world countries, soldiers on the battlefield, clean field hospitals and operating rooms, victims from natural disasters, food stores, or refugees from political turmoil. I am not sure of the cost of each building but from the looks of the size it can fit about eight people comfortably and protected from the elements. I would like to see some real investments in setting up these homes around the world and giving a real home to others. If they are cheap then a fund should be set up to purchase, ship and set up these homes in places such as Africa, South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Recently the Simpsons, my beloved and favorite show of all time, has been making me upset and disappointed. Since about season 10 the quality of the show has gone down. However within the last 5 seasons I will say it has really sunk quickly and I don’t know how much longer they can keep it up. Last Sunday’s episode featured an opening scene of the Simpsons doing the Harlem Shake, A fad that has really gone way overboard allowing people to go full retard for a minute. I was highly disappointed in this move trying to lure in with the new and hip thing but the Simpsons for a longtime lead the way.
I am a nerd. For many years I have been called a nerd. I have been teased and bullied for it. I am proud to call myself a nerd however, this name does not hurt me but instead empowers me and makes me different. The names geek and nerd don’t harm me and I think of them as names that make someone special and actually more interesting.
In my eyes there are many defining attributes that makes someone a nerd. Now a geek and nerd are two different things. A geek is one who follows one specific genre such as a certain game, movie series, comic, fandom, or narrative. A geek is well versed in a lot of the world, history, and defining points and arguments for their love.
I think of a nerd as being someone who can master many different fandom bases, for me I am very knowledgeable in many different realms. I grew up on Star Trek and have seen every episode of every series multiple times as well as understand a lot of the background, history, and details. My main love is Firefly and I am apart of a lot of the Browncoats movements. I am also one for Star Wars, Dr. Who, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and hitchhikers guide. That is just the scifi part, also enjoy many other shows such as How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Castle, Dexter, Trauma, Chuck, Office, Parks and Rec, the simpsons, and many others. Anime is something I also enjoy such as Sgt Frog, Shin Chan, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach, Pokemon, Yugio, Naruto, and Dragonball Z.
Not only do I follow tv shows but movies, comics, and video games. I grew up on Sonic, Calvin and Hobbes, Batman, green lantern, ironman, Thor, and Donald Duck comics and still enjoy reading them. When it comes to video games I have tried and played most of them, not so much recently due to time. I still love to play world of Warcraft, starcraft, legend of zelda, Mario kart, and age of empires. As for movies there are to many to mention but my top three are serenity, Simpsons movie, and Avengers.
I wanted to give you a list because a geek will focus on only one to a handful of these but a nerd is wide spread and verse in very many. This alone doesn’t make one a nerd however there are still many more aspects to it. Nerds are typically loners who have very few friends because of the lifestyle. We tend to get wrapped up in all of these different worlds and enjoy them that we don’t like the real world.
Nerds are also scholars and have a massive knowledge base to pull from. Typically nerds are great at the logical applications, math, and sciences but have knowledge in history and common knowledge. I am well verse in the sciences and have been to large science fairs and won. I am great with computers and fixing things but also having the understand of how things work. True nerds respect intelligence and if they don’t know something they will learn and discover. In the TV show Big Bang Theory, the characters have masters and doctorates in science but retain knowledge of history, facts, and other fields. I enjoy this show because it gives a nice taste of what it is to be a nerd and challenges as well as benefits.
A lot of people however call themselves nerds however they are nothing close to it. There was recently a PSA that was released on the net of being a nerd. These people who think they are a nerd are just really part of a fad. If someone says they play video games and Pokemon ok they might be but then again challenge them and really see what they know. These people wear large dark rimmed glasses thinking that’s what makes you a nerd, it’s not, I had to wear glasses due to eyesight and I like thin metal rims. There are so many differences from people claiming to be nerds and those who truly have been nerds all their life.
The video also states that nerds don’t like to be called nerds and that it is hurtful. For this I will agree, along time ago back in grade school I hated the term. Today I will say that I have grown to the title and actually consider it somewhat of a term of endearment. I say that if you can stand up as make a name something positive then you are stronger and I know I am intelligent and capable of a lot.
I am writing this because I want people to understand my meaning of the term nerd and that I am proud to be someone weird and different in a lot of good ways. You have the ability to be anything and I am comfortable with who I am. The true nerds will rule the world not the fake ones.
Today I would like to wish my best friend Siera a happy 21st birthday. Siera and I met up at FU. I was a year ahead of her and she was an incoming freshman. We had said hello in a halls a few times but I got to know her a little more due to my roommate Chris. He was hitting on this other girl at the time who was close to Siera so that’s how we got to know each other a little more. Over the school year we learned more about each other and really connected over rugby. We talked quite a bit and just began to trust each other when ever we needed to vent or needed help. Many of times I had to help her out with car issues or getting around but it was always a pleasure be cause she is one of those rare awesome people. She is my best friend and I support everything she does and believes in. There are times when it feels like she is pissed at me but I truly care a lot about her and want to make sure she is ok and happy. I want to try and help her in any way I can and even thought she is always busy with hockey and becoming a nurse, I will always have her back and she has mine. She has given me a lot of blunt and forward advise which I need a lot of times and I always respect anything she says. There are times I wish we were closer and being miles apart doesn’t help. I do want her to move to DC and work here for a while and I look forward to a few future trips with her to have fun and enjoy ourselves. Anyways she is one of my few friends and fewer best friends and I would do anything for her and just hope she has a wonderful and enjoyable birthday today!!!
