Not Your Average Comic

Remember a time when you didn’t have an iPhone or iPad when you were settled on the toilet for the long haul? Most people growing up with out these time distractions did not have the Internet at our finger tips so we had to improvise. Most people had a good book, puzzle, magazine, or worst case, the dreaded shampoo bottle to act as a diversion. For myself growing up I had a luxury item in my bathroom for when I needed it, a wonderful comic book titled “Calvin and Hobbes.”

Already 10 Years Later

There are many times where I think back to fond memories in high school where I think of close friends or things that happened. These memories are sometimes so vivid that I feel like they are fresh and just occurred the day before. It is hard to imagine how ever that these memories are 10 years old or even older. I was able to reminisce many of these memories and even several I completely forgot about a few weeks ago with old friends. It really is hard to imagine that over 10 years ago, I graduated from high school and even more hard to imagine that we have now had our 10 year high school reunion weekend. Yes, you read that correctly, Weekend!!! A three hour small gathering is not long enough to catch up with old friends and find out what everyone is up to these days. So our high school reunion committee made it into a small weekend event. A good choice if you ask me because picking a date when everyone is free and able to attend is difficult especially at our age when so many of our friends are getting married and money is still a major factor in plans.

2378 Miles

Last year I did not really have the time or money to go on a trip just for my self. I did want to go to Vegas or camping somewhere however with work and classes getting in the way I had to crap those plans. This year I wanted to make it more about myself and what I wanted to do. It is safe to say I have alot more going on this year than I have in prior years. I have two weddings to go to this year, one of which is my brothers, and classes and work are taking up more of my time. One big event I really wanted to attend was my best friend Siera’s college graduation on Sunday May 3… in Hancock Michigan. That’s right, back to da UP. I must say timing was on my side because her graduation also landed on the best weekend for nerds this year, May 2. I call it the best weekend for nerds because of everything that was going on: Avengers Age of Ultron came out on Friday May 1, Free Comic Book day was on Saturday May 2, and Monday May 4 is ofcourse Star Wars Day. I decided that to make it a real vacation was to stop and stay in Chicago for all the fun events for each of these days. Best decision ever!

Friends around when we need them the most.

For the week of Fourth of July this year my best friend from school flew in and visited me. We had a blast checking out many different museums and monuments around DC. It was the best week I have had this year and in a long time. Since I rarely see any of my friends let alone be able to go to different sights and explore new things; I really cherish these moments and looking back on these really give me hope and happiness.

The Universe

I always enjoy these videos not only because it helps explain scientific content in such a way for everyone to understand, but also because it lets me show it to my friends so they can understand more and learn. I have always enjoyed learning, particularly in the fields of astronomy and physics. I have self taught my self some of these concepts myself through reading books and asking questions. At times these concepts are hard to decipher from text into an image in your mind but these videos do a great job at showcasing and making everything relate-able and visual. This is the real reason why YouTube was created, to share knowledge and get ones ideas and stories in a visual format out to anyone. I already know a lot of these concepts and theories, however seeing them in this way does teach me more and helps me visualize it. Plus it doesn’t hurt to learn more and there is plenty I still don’t know but hope to learn. I commend the channel Minute Physics for their great job and very creative method of teaching others.

I am sorry I have not posted recently. I have been occupied with work and getting things organized. Days have merged together and this last week has sped by. My high school friend and future roommate, Lauren, just moved back into the DC area and has been staying with me. It has be a real pleasure having her around and hanging out. We have been going through Old Town and checking out a few resturants like Flying Fish, Bugsy’s Pizza, Murphy’s, South China, and Light Horse. Also just showing her all the sights and changes since she left the area back in 2005. Since she rarely goes out and views any new movies, we went and saw the Hobbit and her face was just priceless and full of joy, it will be great living with her and showing her all the wonderful movies she has missed. On top of hanging out with Lauren we have also chilled with Jarreau and Naeroby at a party Naeroby was throwing at her apartment for her boyfriends birthday. I am excited and proud to say that within the first week she has been back, she applied and was hired by a great job in DC and she is excited. The weeks before her arrival things were hectet, however now that she is here everything for both of us has been coming together nicely. Anyways the next thing to do is to is to find an apartment and get squared away. Once things get settled I will finish the four posts I am currently working on and might try and get one out by Wednesday.

I am a nerd. For many years I have been called a nerd. I have been teased and bullied for it. I am proud to call myself a nerd however, this name does not hurt me but instead empowers me and makes me different. The names geek and nerd don’t harm me and I think of them as names that make someone special and actually more interesting.

In my eyes there are many defining attributes that makes someone a nerd. Now a geek and nerd are two different things. A geek is one who follows one specific genre such as a certain game, movie series, comic, fandom, or narrative. A geek is well versed in a lot of the world, history, and defining points and arguments for their love.

I think of a nerd as being someone who can master many different fandom bases, for me I am very knowledgeable in many different realms. I grew up on Star Trek and have seen every episode of every series multiple times as well as understand a lot of the background, history, and details. My main love is Firefly and I am apart of a lot of the Browncoats movements. I am also one for Star Wars, Dr. Who, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and hitchhikers guide. That is just the scifi part, also enjoy many other shows such as How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Castle, Dexter, Trauma, Chuck, Office, Parks and Rec, the simpsons, and many others. Anime is something I also enjoy such as Sgt Frog, Shin Chan, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach, Pokemon, Yugio, Naruto, and Dragonball Z.

Not only do I follow tv shows but movies, comics, and video games. I grew up on Sonic, Calvin and Hobbes, Batman, green lantern, ironman, Thor, and Donald Duck comics and still enjoy reading them. When it comes to video games I have tried and played most of them, not so much recently due to time. I still love to play world of Warcraft, starcraft, legend of zelda, Mario kart, and age of empires. As for movies there are to many to mention but my top three are serenity, Simpsons movie, and Avengers.

I wanted to give you a list because a geek will focus on only one to a handful of these but a nerd is wide spread and verse in very many. This alone doesn’t make one a nerd however there are still many more aspects to it. Nerds are typically loners who have very few friends because of the lifestyle. We tend to get wrapped up in all of these different worlds and enjoy them that we don’t like the real world.

Nerds are also scholars and have a massive knowledge base to pull from. Typically nerds are great at the logical applications, math, and sciences but have knowledge in history and common knowledge. I am well verse in the sciences and have been to large science fairs and won. I am great with computers and fixing things but also having the understand of how things work. True nerds respect intelligence and if they don’t know something they will learn and discover. In the TV show Big Bang Theory, the characters have masters and doctorates in science but retain knowledge of history, facts, and other fields. I enjoy this show because it gives a nice taste of what it is to be a nerd and challenges as well as benefits.

A lot of people however call themselves nerds however they are nothing close to it. There was recently a PSA that was released on the net of being a nerd. These people who think they are a nerd are just really part of a fad. If someone says they play video games and Pokemon ok they might be but then again challenge them and really see what they know. These people wear large dark rimmed glasses thinking that’s what makes you a nerd, it’s not, I had to wear glasses due to eyesight and I like thin metal rims. There are so many differences from people claiming to be nerds and those who truly have been nerds all their life.

The video also states that nerds don’t like to be called nerds and that it is hurtful. For this I will agree, along time ago back in grade school I hated the term. Today I will say that I have grown to the title and actually consider it somewhat of a term of endearment. I say that if you can stand up as make a name something positive then you are stronger and I know I am intelligent and capable of a lot.

I am writing this because I want people to understand my meaning of the term nerd and that I am proud to be someone weird and different in a lot of good ways. You have the ability to be anything and I am comfortable with who I am. The true nerds will rule the world not the fake ones.

I have recently been finding awesome videos to easily explain a lot of the interesting aspects of physics. A lot of these I already knew but I still learned a few things… I hope you enjoy because not learning anything makes the brain dull and pointless.

Alexandria, Classes, NOVA, School

Today was my first day of classes again. I am taking 4 classes this semester and these are classes I should have taken during my first year of school. I have to take these classes so I can graduate and I really don’t see the point in some of these but I cant argue all I can do is take the classes. If anything I am glad I got this mess with NOVA taken care of so I am not missing another semester because I am not getting any younger. Most of my classes are going to be night classes after work so I can still work a full day and then make it for 3 hours worth of classes.

An Alexandria Legend.

Today surprised me with someone I have not seen in several years and a person whom I always looked up to, Mr. John Porter. For those of you who don’t know Mr. Porter was the principle at TC Williams High School from 1984 till 2006… 22 amazing years. He is a native to Alexandria and was brought up through Alexandria City Public Schools system. After college he came back to Alexandria and work at the schools. To find someone who has dedicated so much time and has really made an impact to students is a real hidden gem. He always knew peoples names and even their family. He was also there for some of the most scary and dangerous moments in our high school career and he really helped us through them. He was there for us during 9/11, the DC Sniper, terrifying hurricanes, and even the deaths of some of my fellow students. He was a rock to us and I greatly admire him.

Classic gaming

Several months ago I had installed windows on my iMac so I could play Star Wars Old Republic. Well I got tired TOR and I had thought about a few games I loved growing up. A few windows games I missed were roller coaster tycoon, age of empires and sim city. Now yes they do have Mac versions but since I had windows I figured I would use it. Well it just do happened I remembered Steam was having a summer sale so I decided to see what they had since I had never used steam before (yes I knew of it and all just never checked it out in full) and boy was I happy. I picked up Age of Empires 3, Rollercoster Tycoon 2 & 3, Simcity 4, and Skyrim all for real cheap. Of course it took a while to download them all but it was worth it. It’s always nice to go back to some childhood memories… Just pulled an all nighter playing them all. Now to just plug in the N64 and I’ll be set.

Classes, NOVA, School

Ahhh gotta love colleges! Since I had to drop out of classes from Finlandia thanks to my knee injury my gap sank from a 2.6 to a 1.4 which is not me but I could not help it. In spite of of this set back I have tried to get things going and get my life in order. I promised myself I was going to attend classes in fall 2012. I applied to LSU, GMU, JMU, VT and a few others hoping that even with the low gap I could get in so I didn’t have to go to a community college

Well that didn’t quite work the way I wanted to. I received letters from all saying due to my low gap i was no accepted into the programs however if I turned that gap around then I could get things started. So what was my choice to get my gap back? Well I could go back to FU but due to everything and being so far away and not working while I was there I decided on option number two. Northern Virginia Community College, NVCC or Nova as us locals call it was the one place where I could get in transfer credits and rebuild. Sounds easy right? Wrong…

I applied back on the first week of June and tried to follow all the steps but with work and other tasks I only looked into my status once a week. I regret that and wish I looked more closely because thanks to holds on my accounts I am coming down to the wire for registration. Nova is supposed to be a one semester thing so I can turn around my grades, finally get the Associates Degree (due to 3 or 4 core classes that are requirements I have yet to get this) and transfer out to a four year college to finish my last year at school.

First I have been stuck with holds on my account and having to deal with counselors and staff that do not know what certain holds mean which then takes me a week of calling and driving around to the different campuses to find the right person. Once I got rid of one hold another one would show up, there was no list just had to wait and see what popped up next thanks to their checklist system. That is what brings me to this final hold which is keeping my finical aid and registration from being processed. This hold is a refund from back in 2007 when I took a class at Nova. Well the staff does not know how to remove or even process a refund of this nature because I have already received that refund way back when. You would think a refund would not hold an account, sure if I owed money i could see that, but an issue were they owe me money but prevent me from moving on is ridiculous…

Anyways thats where I am at right now and hopefully I can solve this relatively soon so I can attend classes and not miss another semester. I am getting to old for this and I know I won’t have my Bachelors Degree till I am 27. We will have to see but I hope this goes through because I love my current job and the fact I can have this job based off my intellect and hard-work is a blessing but I want more out of life and want to really show my stuff after all my major is astronomy and physics. One day I will have a masters and PHD in Astrophysics.

Wish me luck!
