There is no questions that space is beautiful but it also deadly. With all the radiation, debris, vacuum of space and the still many unknowns, it is a wonder why we ever dare to wander into the void. Man has the instinct to explore and to quote Star Trek, it is the final frontier. Space has many wonders and beautiful cosmic events still left to be witnessed and we want to be the ones to do it.
Remember a time when you didn’t have an iPhone or iPad when you were settled on the toilet for the long haul? Most people growing up with out these time distractions did not have the Internet at our finger tips so we had to improvise. Most people had a good book, puzzle, magazine, or worst case, the dreaded shampoo bottle to act as a diversion. For myself growing up I had a luxury item in my bathroom for when I needed it, a wonderful comic book titled “Calvin and Hobbes.”
Ares, Sol IV, Mars… It goes by many names (much like Earth, Gaia, Terra, or Sol III) but it has remained one of the main focuses when we look to the stars. Why has Mars been on our minds for so long? Will we ever be able to follow Hollywood and actually visit Mars in our lifetimes? Can we seriously see a future and clear distinction between Terrans and Martians? Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system and the only other planet that comes within the habitability zone. The other planets and moons are potentially to dangerous and extreme for us to visit let alone settle. Earth’s Moon, Jupiter’s moon Titan, and a few others could one day be home for humans but the logical choice is Mars.
This past weekend we said goodbye to a person I looked up to for a long time. Leonard Nimoy passed away on the morning of Febuary 27th. He was a cultural icon for many by taking on the role as Spock in the tv show Star Trek. While Star Trek only lasted for 3 season it helped spark the imagination of many and open up the thoughts of the future and taking care of the needs of the many. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, created a future where people of all races and creeds, genders and even worlds would be able to work together. Their goals of exploration and science over greed and self indulgence helped many nerds, including myself, to want to become scientists and care for the future of man-kind.
This weekend AwesomeCon was held in DC and since I have never had the chance or availability to attend any Con except via online such as BlizzCon or ComicCon in LA. I was hoping to find people to go with since I had never been to one before and I was honestly a little nervous. This was the second year of this con and already it had a lot of different panels to choose from and even a nerdy speed dating which I thought was interesting. Since my schedule was already packed I really had to pick and choose what I saw and when.
Google, known for providing search engine unlocking important and needed information, has taken on the task to provide internet access to information to all. While it is a little difficult to provide power, internet service providers and unabated viewing of the internet itself, Google has a possible solution to this issue and it is looking to the skies. More specifically google is looking to the Stratosphere of our atmosphere to get the internet via wifi to places that don’t have any access. Balloons will be the carrier of the technology of these wifi stations and by using the air-currents much higher than what commercial and most military aircraft and operations.
Well a large snow storm hit the DC area causing closures of schools and government and cancellations of many events and activities. Many people do not realize that blood shortages are common during storms because blood drives are canceled and donators can’t make it to the donor services centers. Over the years when there have been disastrous storms, blood stores run dangerously low and blood banks have to ration. I would be devastated if I had to have emergency surgery and there was not enough blood to go around .
I recently found these two videos that show what beekeeping is like as well as harvesting honey. With the decline of hives, seeing that there are people trying to keep these hives is uplifting. Anyways here are two videos that you should watch and just learn a little bit more about how to get honey.
I always enjoy videos like these that are very creative and help teach people about space and our solar system. It is a great way for people to understand more about space. Anyways just enjoy the video.
There has finally been confirmation that Area 51 exists! Now so far the documents that have been released reference it’s existence and location. The documents have many redacted which means additional information has not been released only partial documents. This still means we don’t know much as to what is there or anything that takes place on this CIA base.
I was going through the geek week videos YouTube has and I randomly came across this one video. The video is an explanation as to how bananas are evoking extinct and that some have species already are. This is brand new knowledge to me and frankly I am very surprised. I am not surprised that this is a problem; the video provides plenty of information as to what is happening and it makes perfect sense. I am surprised however at the amount of coverage and media that this problem is getting.
When i was in 8th grade i had a passion for math and science and my teachers challenged me on reading advanced books.I remember reading Flatland by Edward Abbott back in 8th grade and to be honest I didn’t understand it very well. I can’t quite explain what I thought from reading it but I figured it was talking about life on a two dimensional plane and how we interpret shapes. After seeing this video explain part of the dimensional orientation and three dimensional representation on a two dimensional plane, I want to read Flatland again. I hope you enjoy this find and try reading Flatland.
On Friday at 4:59 p.m. EDT, the 1.7-mile-wide space rock 1998 QE2 will harmlessly fly by Earth at a distance of 3.6 million miles. This is a reminder that we live in shooting gallery with a constant threat. Unlike the dinosaurs who did not have a space program (unless we talk about the Voth from Star Trek Voyager) we can watch the skies and have a chance to prevent our own destruction. We are at the point where technology can help us prevent a disaster with such companies as Planetary Resource that are privatizing space travel and even mining of asteroids.
Ok I just need to rant about the new Star Trek because as a long time Trekkie I am unhappy with this movie.
This was such a moving short to watch because it makes you think when the end is near what will you do to insure your children’s survival. I hope you enjoy it because I really loved it and I have never seen anyone come up with this idea or topic before.
Yesterday the largest known cyber attack occurred in South Korea targeting ATM’s and Broadcasting stations. This attack was cripping because it prevented people from gaining access to their money as well as communication. Even though the rest of the inferstructer was not targeted or affected, not being able to get to one’s money can cause panic and chaos. It is scary to think that we are so vulnerable. I am seriously considering always keeping cash with me. I do have a go-bag that does have some money along with tradable commodities but to think a cyberattack can cause this much chaos is the world we live in. I am writing another post about the real skynet issue and how we are opening ourselves to be the targets of cyberattacks.
I watched this video earlier today and I was astonished at the new technology that allows for a sturdy structure to be erected within just five hours. This is a great step for bringing safe havens for people in third-world countries, soldiers on the battlefield, clean field hospitals and operating rooms, victims from natural disasters, food stores, or refugees from political turmoil. I am not sure of the cost of each building but from the looks of the size it can fit about eight people comfortably and protected from the elements. I would like to see some real investments in setting up these homes around the world and giving a real home to others. If they are cheap then a fund should be set up to purchase, ship and set up these homes in places such as Africa, South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
I always enjoy these videos not only because it helps explain scientific content in such a way for everyone to understand, but also because it lets me show it to my friends so they can understand more and learn. I have always enjoyed learning, particularly in the fields of astronomy and physics. I have self taught my self some of these concepts myself through reading books and asking questions. At times these concepts are hard to decipher from text into an image in your mind but these videos do a great job at showcasing and making everything relate-able and visual. This is the real reason why YouTube was created, to share knowledge and get ones ideas and stories in a visual format out to anyone. I already know a lot of these concepts and theories, however seeing them in this way does teach me more and helps me visualize it. Plus it doesn’t hurt to learn more and there is plenty I still don’t know but hope to learn. I commend the channel Minute Physics for their great job and very creative method of teaching others.
I am a nerd. For many years I have been called a nerd. I have been teased and bullied for it. I am proud to call myself a nerd however, this name does not hurt me but instead empowers me and makes me different. The names geek and nerd don’t harm me and I think of them as names that make someone special and actually more interesting.
In my eyes there are many defining attributes that makes someone a nerd. Now a geek and nerd are two different things. A geek is one who follows one specific genre such as a certain game, movie series, comic, fandom, or narrative. A geek is well versed in a lot of the world, history, and defining points and arguments for their love.
I think of a nerd as being someone who can master many different fandom bases, for me I am very knowledgeable in many different realms. I grew up on Star Trek and have seen every episode of every series multiple times as well as understand a lot of the background, history, and details. My main love is Firefly and I am apart of a lot of the Browncoats movements. I am also one for Star Wars, Dr. Who, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and hitchhikers guide. That is just the scifi part, also enjoy many other shows such as How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Castle, Dexter, Trauma, Chuck, Office, Parks and Rec, the simpsons, and many others. Anime is something I also enjoy such as Sgt Frog, Shin Chan, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Bleach, Pokemon, Yugio, Naruto, and Dragonball Z.
Not only do I follow tv shows but movies, comics, and video games. I grew up on Sonic, Calvin and Hobbes, Batman, green lantern, ironman, Thor, and Donald Duck comics and still enjoy reading them. When it comes to video games I have tried and played most of them, not so much recently due to time. I still love to play world of Warcraft, starcraft, legend of zelda, Mario kart, and age of empires. As for movies there are to many to mention but my top three are serenity, Simpsons movie, and Avengers.
I wanted to give you a list because a geek will focus on only one to a handful of these but a nerd is wide spread and verse in very many. This alone doesn’t make one a nerd however there are still many more aspects to it. Nerds are typically loners who have very few friends because of the lifestyle. We tend to get wrapped up in all of these different worlds and enjoy them that we don’t like the real world.
Nerds are also scholars and have a massive knowledge base to pull from. Typically nerds are great at the logical applications, math, and sciences but have knowledge in history and common knowledge. I am well verse in the sciences and have been to large science fairs and won. I am great with computers and fixing things but also having the understand of how things work. True nerds respect intelligence and if they don’t know something they will learn and discover. In the TV show Big Bang Theory, the characters have masters and doctorates in science but retain knowledge of history, facts, and other fields. I enjoy this show because it gives a nice taste of what it is to be a nerd and challenges as well as benefits.
A lot of people however call themselves nerds however they are nothing close to it. There was recently a PSA that was released on the net of being a nerd. These people who think they are a nerd are just really part of a fad. If someone says they play video games and Pokemon ok they might be but then again challenge them and really see what they know. These people wear large dark rimmed glasses thinking that’s what makes you a nerd, it’s not, I had to wear glasses due to eyesight and I like thin metal rims. There are so many differences from people claiming to be nerds and those who truly have been nerds all their life.
The video also states that nerds don’t like to be called nerds and that it is hurtful. For this I will agree, along time ago back in grade school I hated the term. Today I will say that I have grown to the title and actually consider it somewhat of a term of endearment. I say that if you can stand up as make a name something positive then you are stronger and I know I am intelligent and capable of a lot.
I am writing this because I want people to understand my meaning of the term nerd and that I am proud to be someone weird and different in a lot of good ways. You have the ability to be anything and I am comfortable with who I am. The true nerds will rule the world not the fake ones.
